What is an SEMH teacher?

An SEMH teacher may be one who works in an advisory capacity between multiple schools, either for a local authority or a trust. They may also work in one particular setting cohorts of young people who experience significant barriers to learning (primarily associated with SEMH). An SEMH professional may also work in a mainstream setting with small groups or in intervention sessions. It is also likely to see them in a specialist setting.

What does a teacher in an SEMH role do?

They will consider the child in the whole, looking at factors relating to behaviours and establishing support plans for that child. They may advise other teachers, help children to develop the skills they need to become independent or even run training in the area of SEMH. They may also run nurture groups or other interventions. SEMH professionals will be skilled the area of de-escalation and may help schools to develop risk assessments.
