SEMH Books

SEMH books are available from a range of different sources and it can often be a challenge to decide which ones to purchase with very limited budgets. Some SEMH resources are for increasing staff knowledge, some to facilitate group work, some to lend to pupils and others to support 1:1 work with a child.

Therapeutic Stories

There are also a range of Therapeutic Stories from Margot Sunderland which provide an opportunity to explore difficult topics through a metaphor with a child.

For those working as a SENCO, this book may be helpful.

If you are looking for workbooks to use with children the Gremlin series of books have proven particularly useful in primary schools. For older children this might be helpful.

Train the trainer

Dr Tina Rae has a long history of producing excellent “train the trainer” style books providing material on a range of topics that can be delivered in schools by staff with the resources provided. Check out the Wellbeing Toolkit for Mental Health Leads

Supportive Conversations

For ideas on holding supportive conversations with young children, Conversations that Matter is an excellent resource.

Self Esteem

If you are looking to increase the self esteem of a particular student, this resource might be helpful. It has a range of photocopiable resources to be used again and again with different groups / individuals.

All rounder

By far the most popular resource on this website is this – the CBT Toolbox for Children.

Aside from these resources, the following SEMH books are recommended to help support children as well as to increase the confidence and knowledge of those working with them. Reviews will be written for these texts in time, have fun reading!
